With regard to the highly competitive environment, the world continues to establish new stereotypes that are built on the old cliché. In fact, the contemporary relations between men and women tend to become more tolerant. However, there are still many stereotypes, which penetrate into every workplace differently. Leadership gains various characteristic features that men and women encourage. There are issues which correspond directly to the essence of male and female leadership. The following discussion compares different leadership styles of the corporate CEO, which is one of the most responsible positions for the company’s success.
First, it is necessary to emphasize that both men and women realize the significance of CEO position and the responsibility of leading employees to achieve the same goal. Alice Eagly, an outstanding gender expert, claims that a leadership position and its style depend on the woman’s ability to overcome the challenges on the way to the top (Eagly & Carli, 2007). Thus, the problems and difficulties help a woman to formulate a specific leadership approach, which is similar to the male leadership. On the one hand, the leadership styles of men and women have much in common due to the similar functions and responsibilities in the position of corporate CEO (Aarum Andersen & Hansson, 2011). On the other hand, it is possible to see various differences which make leadership styles unlike. For example, the researchers of male and female leaders can easily explain the differences between both types of leaders. While mentioning positive attributes of a female leader (caring, responsible, attentive), they can also point some disadvantages (moody) (Riggio, 2010). In fact, there should be a deep insight into every responsibility CEO as a leader should take in order to notice the slightest differences between men and women while they are leading others.
Female leaders have a task-focused vision, which helps them to concentrate and perform duties of the highest quality. Routine activity is necessary for female leaders. Therefore, it is considered that there is a need to complete every task with full concentration and responsibility (Carter, 2012). As a result, women emphasize the importance of every task to the strategic success of the company. Male leaders, in their turn, prefer to focus on the performance and productivity of other employees and team members (Krinzman, 2015). Male leaders believe that a continuous improvement of the performance has a positive influence on the enhancement of the overall productivity and profitability of the corporation.
The majority of women choose a transformational leadership style which helps to build the relations full of trust and mutual support with the workers. In fact, a transformational leadership style is a combination of techniques and prominent features that boost the development of leader’s potential (Eagly & Carli, 2007). It also helps to change the company’s structure and organizational culture according to the terms of the external competitive environment. However, men tend to use a transactional leadership style. It means that the performance of the company is a series of processes with inputs and outputs. Owing to this fact, male leadership focuses on the accomplishment of objectives.
It is essential to mention that there are many differences in the leadership styles of men and women. However, it does not mean that there is a male or female dominance in terms of leadership. Men and women have developed opposite approaches towards leadership focusing on their natural attributions. However, it does not have any influence on the effectiveness of leadership. Employees believe their leaders and follow their action-based tasks without any hesitation. The research proves that men and women apply different approaches towards leadership, but the effectiveness of a chosen style does not depend on the gender, but on the ability to lead a team.
